Raise your salon prices NOW

Who says there is no inflation so we can’t raise prices? Price Hikes are happening. As reported in Money Magazine Updated in 2016 Inflation is at 4% and some products are even higher: Fuel oil +22% Gasoline +11% Coffee +16% Milk +13% How are people responding? 39% cutting back on spending 28% adding more to retirement/savings 17% paid down/off credit cards 20% gave more to charity 16% gave less to charity 14% refinanced the house 14% changed health insurance So as salon and spa owners we need to raise prices (or quit serving coffee) at least 4%. Plus we need to have a small increase each year so clients don’t get sticker shock when we have to raise prices 20% because we have held the prices down for 8 years! We also need to appeal to the frugality of people by offering unbundled services and price levels. Packages, series, and memberships also help people justify spending while feeling like they are cutting back. Don’t rule out the new trend of Frugality Fatigue with the more well off. Loss for the industry and the MIKAL Family

We lost a great friend, client, and supporter this past week. Kenneth Collopy left this world and will me missed. Kenneth R. Collopy March 15, 1943 - June 12, 2017 Kenneth was a 58-year veteran of the cosmetology industry who learned European cutting techniques and much of his trade from Antoine Cierplikowski, the world's first celebrity stylist. Kenneth founded two separate salons in Cincinnati; cut and coiffed countless beautiful women from Cincinnati and across the country; taught nationwide from platforms at hair shows for major professional product manufacturers such as Helene Curtis and Zotos; produced and hosted a regular fashion segment for the locally produced and regionally syndicated Bob Braun Show; served as professional educator of hair care and advanced cutting techniques for one of the country's most successful major contract manufacturers of hair care products; was named one of the country's ten best hairstylists by a leading consumer publication; designed, manufactured in FDA-approved laboratories and marketed his own line of professional hair care products; partnered with Procter & Gamble's Salon Education Division in its earliest endeavors to educate and prepare cosmetology students for the real world of salon work; served as consultant to Fortune 500 companies; developed advanced educational programs for many salon companies; taught advanced haircutting techniques for Mark D. Foley's long-running Sail to Supernatural Salon Success educational cruises; was an ongoing consultant for Mikal Corporation, Cincinnati-based developer of the industry's leading and longest running salon and spa software; was an independent national educator for his own dry cutting techniques, developed and perfected over nearly half a century; and launched countless successful cosmetology careers. He loved and promoted Olaplex every chance he got, calling it a total game changer for the industry. Kenneth was a past president of the Blue Ash Retail and Professional Association, has been a longtime member of The Salon Association and The Professional Beauty Association and achieved the highest office in McMillan Lodge 141, a local Cincinnati Masonic Lodge known for its philanthropic support of the Greater Cincinnati community. Right up to the end, on oxygen 24/7, Kenneth worked three days a week because he loved and was devoted to his wonderful clientele and was passionate about cutting hair and helping women discover their very own individual beauty.

Nail Industry Trends 2016 Nailpro Essentials issue. I just finished studying the Nailpro survey for 2016 and there are some numbers and trends that jumped out at me. Be sure to read the entire issue, at the same time here are some of the key points as I see them. Overall the nail industry is strong and at the same time it is changing. To capitalize on the growth nail techs and nail salons/departments need to evaluate how these changes can be leveraged in the business to grow. First the independents accounted for 60% of the respondents in this survey and 34% were owners or employees. 6% were others….okay what ever that means. The survey showed independents were independent because they felt they could make more money, set their own schedules, and have more control over their time and schedules. At MIKAL salons have surveyed clients and one of the big complaints about independents is that they don’t keep a set schedule and tend to move appointments to accommodate personal scheduling needs. Interesting…. Income showed 69% of independents earn under $550 a week. That tends to show that unless you are well established with a large client base being an independent to make more money is not realized. The BIG FOUR in services are natural manicure 92% provide and charge $20 booking 34 minutes, Pedicure 89% provide and charge $33 booking 48 minutes, Nail art 84% provide and soak-off gel/gel polish 83% at $32 booking 55 minutes. The dollars per hour do not seem to correspond with the services times booked. Check your service times and make sure the time booked earns the dollars per hour desired. Add-ons are a great way to increase the client ticket and satisfaction level (who does not like a paraffin treatments?) The average prices for paraffin $11, nail strengthener $10, anti-fungal $14 and callus softener $13. Are you taking advantage of these up sell opportunities and have them in your booking script and as a pop-up recommendation on your on-line booking? The Customer Service portion of the survey was interesting. The techs complained about guests bringing companions, cell phone use, and lateness. The clients complained about the prices, waiting for service, sanitation and injury to the nails. A survey buy nail techs or salons to the clients using SurveyMonkey.com with questions on these topics would help each tech/salon concentrate on improving the client experience. Salon Owners Barter for Profits!

MIKAL BARTER IDEAS MIKAL knows that in today’s economy, salon owners sometimes save money through bartering to get products or services they need. The IRS wants to remind salon owners that the fair market value of property or services received through barter is taxable income. Bartering is the trading of one product or service for another. Usually there is no exchange of cash. However, the fair market value of the goods and services exchanged must be reported as income by both parties. MIKAL allows you to track barter through the Accounts Receivable system. Set up the barter client in the client system and when you give them services/retail put the sales transaction on accounts receivable. This will keep track of what you have done for them. Also make an item call flowers or pizza or what ever as an accounts receivable payment item and use it with the client when they “pay” you by providing their products. This way you can see if the relationship is balanced and also give the barter partner information on how the relationship is going. You can also make Barter a pass thru sale by using the paytype for pass thought. This does not give you the a/r balance info but does show activity for the barter client. Pass through sales have different features and you should consult with MIKAL when setting this feature up. Call MIKAL at 513-528-5100. Here are four facts on bartering: 1. Organized barter exchanges A barter exchange functions primarily as the organizer of a marketplace where members buy and sell products and services among themselves. Whether this activity operates out of a physical office or is internet-based, a barter exchange is generally required to issue Form 1099-B, Proceeds from Broker and Barter Exchange Transactions, annually to their clients or members and to the IRS. 2. Barter income Barter dollars or trade dollars are identical to real dollars for tax reporting purposes. If you conduct any direct barter – barter for another’s products or services – you must report the fair market value of the products or services you received on your tax return. 3. Tax implications of bartering Income from bartering is taxable in the year it is performed. Bartering may result in liabilities for income tax, self-employment tax, employment tax or excise tax. Your barter activities may result in ordinary salon income, capital gains or capital losses, or you may have a nondeductible personal loss. 4. How to report. The rules for reporting barter transactions may vary depending on which form of bartering takes place. Generally, you report this type of salon income on Form 1040, Schedule C Profit or Loss from Business, or other business returns such as Form 1065 for Partnerships, Form 1120 for Corporations or Form 1120-S for Salon Corporations. November Salon Marketing Ideas from Fred at MIKAL Salon Software

November INCREASE your COLOR prices at the first of this month to take advantage of the Holiday RUSH. IT’S DATA COLLECTION TIME! Now is the time to make sure all of your customer information is correct. You will see more of your customers in the next 60 days than in the next six months. Activate the incomplete address warning at point of sale so the front desk always captures all of the customer address information. Run the incomplete address list for last visit equals last week customers every week to make sure the receptionists are capturing all of the information. Idea: want to get everyone’s e-mail or text number? Have a contest. Put a gift basket of slow moving products together. Set up a table with the basket, sign up forms, and drawing box. All you ask for on the sign up form is the name and either their e-mail or text number (on the form tell them that is how you will contact the winner). Everyone will give there info to you! Update the information into the MIKAL software for your post-holiday marketing. Implement a strategy to move customers booking appointments to less busy days and times. Every customer will want to come in on Saturday. Always offer early week appointments first and give the customers reasons to book early in the week (less hectic, more time to work on the customer, better quality time with the customer). Idea: offer the free cookies and baked goods on Monday and Tuesday NOT on Saturday! The more customers you can move to early week and morning appointments the more opportunity you will have to service new customers during prime walk in times! Book smarter for more profits. 2015 let's forget Resolutions and work on EVOLUTION

2015 is HERE! Don’t think New Year’s Resolutions, think New Year’s EVOLUTION Resolutions don’t work. The average person keeps them for less than 2 weeks (remember the gym membership, fruit diet, juicer machine etc…). Why don’t resolutions work? Because it is our human behavior. It is our habit. It is easy. It might even be satisfying. So instead of trying to change behavior why not change the environment, the process, or the system and the behavior will change. So instead let’s EVOLVE! Let’s look at every system and process in our business and figure out how we can make it simpler, faster, better for staff and clients, and of course more profitable. A few examples: The front desk is an area of on-going frustration. Turn over of staff, poor client service, down time is not used to clean, organize, do confirmations, and retail and rebooking is not a priority. So do we resolve to put as much time into the front desk as needed to change these things? Do we clean house and hire new receptionists? Is that our Resolution, to have a Revolution? Ready to go all Tabitha on the desk? Or……. How about putting in message on hold and call queue option on the phone to auto hold calls if not answered in 2 rings so the front desk can finish sales, rebook, and close retail without interruptions on putting people on hold? - Support system involves giving the upsell offers in your message on hold. - Education needs to happen so staff knows how to handle the call queue option. How about giving a bonus when the receptionist rebooks a client, upsells a service, converts a price call to a booking, and sells NEW retail items to a client? The desk would be rewarded to do the things you want them to do. Sales would increase, retention would go up, and the bonus would increase wages so they would not leave over a fifty cent pay increase from a company down the street. - Support system involves setting spiffs for rebooks, upsells, add on sales in MIKAL. - Education needs to have scripting in place to deliver the offers. - Support system needs to give clients loyalty points for rebooking automatically. How about setting up the receptionist goals so every week they get a report on how they are doing compared to your expectations? If the present desk staff can’t embrace these positive steps how about hiring people that are going to embrace your systems? So we Evolve with changes to the systems and the process allowing the people to change their behavior. You can manage the process instead of the people. Why not do this for other areas? Retailing – what can be changed to make retail easy? Professional inventory- what can be put in place to track and fine tune inventory? Stylist behaviors – what can be put in place to reward positive behaviors? Social marketing – what can be put in place to make it automatic and effective?
